About Washington Park ArboretumThe Washington Park Arboretum occupies most of the Washington Park, where the University of Washington was authorized to design, construct, plant and manage an Arboretum and Botanical Garden. This amazing place became a popular destination for locals and tourists alike since its very beginnings. There are 230 acres to explore and enjoy since the Washington Park Arboretum gathers an assortment of plants that is quite unique.
In the Washington Park you can also enjoy a playfield and the Seattle Japanese Garden that is to be found in the south end of the Arboretum.
Unfortunately, the Washington Park Arboretum is threatened by the potential impact of the recent plans for reconstruction and expansion of State Route 520 and the replacement of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge. Such actions might influence the plants and wildlife of the Arboretum by bringing consistent changes to their environment, including the shadows created by the roadways.
As such, alternatives have been proposed in order to diminish this impact: the “Arboretum Bypass Plan” is one of them and it refers to the construction of a new elevated highway over Union Bay on a more northerly route. Therefore, on thing is for sure: until plans become more consistent, you should definitely make some time to visit the wonderful gardens in Washington Park Arboretum.
