About Virginia Mason Medical Center
The Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC) is a privately owned, non-profit organization located in Seattle, Washington. The CEO and chairman of the VMMC is Gary S. Kaplan, MD. The name of the organization comes from the daughters of its two founders: Dr. Tate Mason's daughter, Virginia Mason, and Dr. John Blackford's daughter, Virginia Mason Blackford.

The Virginia Mason Medical Center serves the Virginia Mason Hospital, providing a system of integrated health services, such as the following: primary and specialized care offered by a multi-specialty group practice of more than 480 physicians, a regional network of neighborhood clinics including sports and occupational medicine facilities, a care hospital licensed for 336 beds, the internationally recognized Benaroya Research Institute, an active philanthropic foundation, and the Bailey-Boushay House, which is a nursing residence and day health center for people living with AIDS.

The VMMC is also home to the Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS). The latter was started in 2002 by the Virginia Mason Medical Center in order to improve patient safety and quality care by means of the Toyota Production System. Due to this program, the Virginia Mason Medical Center arrived to be named one of the top hospitals in the Leapfrog Group.

Moreover, the Virginia Mason Medical Center includes a number of centers of excellence, specialized in treating certain diseases: the Benaroya Diabetes Center, which is actually the most notable in the Pacific Northwest, the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine, the Digestive Disease Institute, the Floyd & Delores Jones Cancer Institute, the Heart Institute, the Neuroscience Institute, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and Urology.
