About Seattle Repertory Theater
The Seattle Repertory Theatre is a genuine attraction in Seattle, Washington. Also known as The Rep, it is a major regional theatre located at the Seattle Center and member of Theatre Puget Sound and Theatre Communications Group.

The Seattle Repertory Theatre opened in 1963 and it was first housed at the Seattle Playhouse, as part of the fair grounds of the Century 21 Exposition (1962). In 1987 the theatre was renovated as a home for the Intiman Theatre. Actor Hal Holbrook came with the idea to transform the theatre into a home for a repertory theatre company and businessman and arts patron Bagley Wright took the initiative and made this possible.

The company’s first season opened with King Lear, performed on November 14, 1963 and directed by Stuart Vaughn, the founding artistic director.

In 1972, while Peter Donnelly was producing director and W. Duncan Ross artistic director, the Seattle Repertory Theatre was acknowledged for its artistic role in the state with the Washington State Governor's Arts Award.

During the 1970s there were raised $5.8 million for a new theatre, begun in 1977 and completed in 1983. In 1981, with Daniel Sullivan as artistic director, the “Elegant Elephant Sale” was initiated by the Seattle Repertory Organization as an event that continued for nearly two decades.

In 1990, the Seattle Repertory Theatre enjoyed the distinction of receiving a Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.

In 2007, the Seattle Repertory Theatre started a partnership with Seattle Children’s Theatre in order to integrate theater into the curricula. The theatre also offers an internship program for college students as a genuine promoter of the arts.
