About Seattle Boeing Fld. (BFI)However, the airport’s main property is located mostly in Seattle, south of Georgetown and extending towards Tukwila on a surface of 594 acres. It is named after William E. Boeing, the founder of the Boeing Company. While providing passenger service, the Seattle Boeing Fld. (BFI) is mostly used by general aviation and cargo, handling more than 375,000 operations every year.
For a bit of insight into the history of Seattle Boeing Fld. (BFI), you should know that it used to be Seattle’s main passenger airport, except the period of the World War II. It served this purpose from its construction in 1928 until the late 1940s when the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport began its operations.
Today it is generally used for testing and delivery of its airplanes, while being a major regional cargo hub. Equally important, the Seattle Boeing Fld. (BFI) is the landing zone for Air Force One when it visits the area.
Although there have been proposals from the Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines for the Seattle Boeing Field (BFI) to serve passenger airlines, they have been declined by King County Executive Ron Sims in 2005.
