About Northgate Mall
Northgate Mall is among the attractions that draw tourists to Seattle. As expected, it is a shopping mall located in the Northgate district of north urban Seattle, Washington. It includes anchors such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Toys "R" Us, JCPenney, Macy's and Nordstrom.

Its beginnings can be traced back to 1950 when it opened with eighteen stores and registered an immediate success. The mall was designed by Seattle architect John Graham, Jr. and it was built over part of Thornton Creek.

Northgate Mall was actually the first of the three Puget Sound-area malls developed by Allied Stores and actually the first shopping center in the United States to be considered a mall. In 1952, Northgate Mall was enriched with the cedar totem pole designed by sculptor Dudley C. Carter, decorating its grand entrance.

Northgate Mall was initially anchored by The Bon Marché (renamed Macy’s from 2005), but other tenants still existing today are the National Bank of Commerce (renamed Wells Fargo), Nordstrom shoes, JCPenney and Lamonts. Gottschalks took over Lamonts in 2000, but resisted in Northgate Mall until 2006. Its location was replaced by DSW Shoes and Bed Bath and Beyond.

Due to Northgate’s success, Graham was commissioned by Allied Stores to design the fully enclosed Tacoma Mall, opened in 1964, and Tukwila’s Southcenter Mall in 1968, while Northgate enclosed in 1974. By 1980 the mall reached the impressive number of 123 stores.

The construction began in summer 2006 and was completed in 2008, occupying a surface of 100,000 square-feet. Starting from 2006, Northgate Mall was included in the Simon Properties’ plans for expansion, so it became the anchor for surrounding apartment buildings, commercial establishments, and other community spaces that are in continuous development.
