About International DistrictIt owes its name to the fact that it gathers a mixture of minorities: Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Filipino Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Korean Americans, Thai Americans, Laotian Americans, Cambodian Americans, Burmese Americans, as well as other Asian Americans.
There is a portion east of Interstate 5 and north of South Lane Street that is named “Little Saigon” due to the fact that it houses a high concentration of Vietnamese businesses.
The International District comprises the blocks east of Fifth Avenue S., west of Boren and Rainier Avenues S, north of S. Deaborn Street and south of S. Main Street. The prominent streets in the International District are South Jackson Street, South King Street and 12th Avenue South in Little Saigon.
Another representative place is Hing Hay Park that works as a gathering place for many. There are certain points of attraction for those who live here, as well as for tourists: the Wing Luke Asian Museum, Kobe Terrace, as well as the Danny Woo International District Community Garden, where neighborhood residents have urban gardens, the Uwajimaya supermarket, and the Union Station office complex.
Many buildings in the International District have been destroyed because of the construction of Interstate 5 during the 1960s. As a result, in the 1970s many organizations got involved for the preservation of the neighborhood and in 1987 the International District finally gained federal status as the “Seattle Chinatown Historic District”.
