About Hiram M. Chittenden Locks
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are a complex of locks located at the western end of Salmon Bay, which is part of Seattle’s Lake Washington Ship Canal. They are locally known as the Ballard Locks due to the neighborhood to the north.

As for the official name, the locks take it from the U.S. Army Major Hiram Martin Chittenden, who was a Seattle District Engineer for the Corps of Engineers during 1906-1908.

The locks were operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and officially opened on July 4, 1917, but the first ship actually passed on August 3, 1916.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks have multi-purposes together with the associated facilities: maintaining the water level of fresh water of Lake Washington and Lake Union above sea level, prevention of the saltwater intrusion from Puget Sound into the lake water, and the movement of the boats from the water level of the lakes to the water level of Puget Sound and vice versa.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks mediate the passing of both pleasure boats and commercial vessels, registering traffic of over 1 million tons of cargo, fuel, building materials, and seafood products per year.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks include two locks, a small one, used when boat traffic is low in order to conserve fresh water during the summer season, and a large one; a spillway with six gates for water-level control, and a fish ladder for the migration of anadromous fish.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks also include a visitors’ center, as well as the Carl S. English, Jr., Botanical Gardens. You should also know that the locks were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
