About Henry Art GalleryDesigned by Bebb and Gould, it was expanded to 40,000 square feet after 50 years, adding a 154-seat auditorium. The expanded construction was designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects.
The Henry Art Gallery was founded by Horace C. Henry, a local businessman who donated money and a collection of paintings. Actually, he had transformed a part of his home on Capitol Hill into a free museum that functioned as such from 1917 until the foundation of the official gallery.
At the Henry Art Gallery you can enjoy exhibitions of contemporary art and the history of photography. Recently there have been added solo exhibitions by Maya Lin (2006), Lynn Hershman Leeson (2005-06), Doug Aitken (2005), Axel Lieber (2004-05), and James Turrell (2003), as well as group exhibitions such as W.O.W. - The Work of the Work (2004-05).
The Henry Art Gallery houses over 20,000 objects, some of which are gifts or purchase of the Joseph and Elaine Monsen collection, to which added a considerable inherited collection from the University of Washington's former Costume and Textile Study Center.
At the Henry Art Gallery you can also admire the James Turrel skyspace, Light Reign. What is also quite unique about this gallery is the fact that the collections are available for research or general public interest, while the Reed Collection Study Center provides in-house and online access.
