About Discovery Park
Discovery Park is a wonderful place to visit if you happen to be in Seattle. With a surface of 534 acres, it is the city’s largest public park, located in the peninsular Magnolia neighborhood.

With 11.81 miles of walking trails, Discovery Park also contains the United Indians of All Tribes’ Daybreak Star Cultural Center. Moreover, given the fact that the park is built on the historic grounds of Fort Lawton, most of the Fort Lawton Historic District (FLHD) is contained within the park boundaries together with the West Point Lighthouse.

Also, the FLHD and the lighthouse are signed on the National Register of Historic Places, so these attractions should add more interest in this amazing park. Given the fact that Discovery Park was created in the early 1970s from land surplus to the U.S. Army's Fort Lawton, there is an area of the FLHD that remains under military control.

Discovery Park ensures the appropriate environment for wildlife, so you can admire numerous species of birds (270 species according to the Seattle Audubon Society) and marine mammals such as harbor seals and California sea lions that live in the Elliott and Shilshole Bays, while in the wooden areas you can encounter Townsend’s chipmunks.

There are numerous tree species that populate the park such as Bigleaf maple, red alder, bitter cherry, Douglas-fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock, as well as invasive species such as Himalayan blackberry, Scot's broom, English Ivy, and Holly.

Therefore, in Discovery Park there are numerous things to admire, shaped by nature or built by man’s hand, all integrated in the midst of the wonderful scenery.
