About Burke Museum of Natural History and CultureThe Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture was named in the honor of Judge Thomas Burke whose wife, Caroline McGilvra Burke, funded a major part of the museum’s construction.
The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture holds an impressive collection of over 12 million artifacts and specimens from the fields of anthropology, biology, as well as geology. There are outstanding collections that you should definitely dedicate some time to. The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture prepared for you the nation's fifth largest collection of Northwest Coast and Alaskan Native art, the world's largest collection of spread bird wings (a technique pioneered by Burke himself), the world's second largest collection of frozen bird tissues for genetic research, one of the largest collections of Northwest plants and fungi, and over one million archaeological artifacts and extensive collections from Washington state sites around Puget Sound and the Columbia River.
The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture houses long-term exhibits (three-long term exhibits: "Life and Times of Washington State," "Pacific Voices," and "Treasures of the Burke."), as well as temporary exhibits, changing throughout the year in the temporary galleries.
